NT Formula One Mono is a typeface I have created to fulfill a role in my current Formula One information project. I designed it to fit the following criteria:
- The typeface has to be legible at the smallest possible size, which I have found to be 5 pixels.
- The typeface has to be monospaced to facilitate the spacing of columns in the design.
- The typeface only has to be used for small lines of copy, not for sentences or paragraphs.
- The typeface must contain glyphs for all commonly used punctuation, mathematic symbols and accents (Acute, Grave, Circumflex, Tilde, Diaresis, Cedilla) as well as an Eszett (German double S).
The result is an almost fully featured typeface with the ability to articulate all the information required of it in the project whilst keeping the physical size of the outcome down, if the outcome is to be a digital screen piece. The function of this typeface was regarded as more important than the form during the design, so whilst it may not be the prettiest typeface, it fits the intended role quite effectively.
This typeface was made using FontForge, a free, easy to use open-source typeface creator.
